Holiday 2017 Guide
Services and Programs
Thanksgiving in the Woods
Wednesday, November 22, 2017 – 4:00 pm
Thanksgiving in the Woods is a great opportunity to return thanks to God before the hectic business of Thanksgiving commences. The service begins at 4:00 pm in the labyrinth garden/fire pit. Park in the rear parking lot and head up the hill to the fire pit for a service of thanks with a creative retelling of the Gospel, unaccompanied singing, and closeness with fellow members of Ascension. Make sure to watch the weather in case you need to bundle up!
Thursday, November 23, 2017 – 10:00 am
Take a moment before the Thanksgiving feast and activities begin (and after a few Macy’s parade floats) to return your thanks in this service of Holy Eucharist-Rite II in the chapel at 10:00 am on Thanksgiving morning. The service will feature a small choir and hymns.
Webb Madrigal Singers
Tuesday, November 28, 7:30 pm
The Webb Madrigal Singers will kick-off your Christmas spirit with a concert of classic Christmas anthems, carols, and other sacred/secular literature. If you haven’t heard the Webb Madrigal Singers, this is a free concert you won’t want to miss! We would like to thank the Stephen Ministry at Ascension for hosting this concert. Head to the parish hall to hear the concert.
Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans
Sunday, December 3, 2017
Get your liturgical year started with the bang of a drum and the drone of bagpipes as we celebrate the Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans, a commemoration of the Christianization of the Scottish clans, traditionally celebrated on the feast of St. Andrew. The Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans will occur only at the 11:15 am service. The 7:45 and 9:00 am services will just be the First Sunday of Advent services.
Behind the Music
Wednesday, December 6, 6:00 pm
On Wednesday, December 6th, join The Reverend Christopher Hogin for Behind the Music, an exploration of the stories behind some of our most beloved Christmas carols, both secular and sacred, followed by a sing-along. The program begins with dinner in the parish hall at 6:00 pm, with the actual presentation itself beginning at 6:45 pm, concluding by 7:30 pm. Childcare will be provided.
West High School Christmas Concert
Thursday, December 7, 7:00 pm
Couldn’t make the Webb Madrigal Singers concert? Can’t get enough of that Christmas cheer? Come support the West High School choirs at the annual West High School Christmas Concert.
Advent Lessons and Carols
Sunday, December 10, 2017 – 5:30 pm
The Parish Choir, Ascension Singers, and Boys and Girls’ Choir will present a candlelight service of Lessons and Carols at 5:30 pm. Prophetic readings and matching anthems come together to frame the atmosphere of “watchful waiting” characteristic of Advent. A reception will follow in the parish hall.
A Grace-Filled Christmas
Wednesday, December 13, 5:00 pm
People either delight in the period leading up to Christmas, or endure it with dread. On Wednesday, December 13, the Stephen Ministry group at Ascension will offer a service entitled, A Grace-Filled Christmas. It’s a time where all people can experience the holiness of the season in a quiet, contemplative manner that both affirms the dignity of those who struggle during the holidays, while at the same time emphasizing hope and light. The service begins at 5:00 pm in the nave, followed by a community supper downstairs.
The Third Sunday of Advent – Christmas Pageant
Sunday, December 17, 2017
Two services will be held on Sunday, December 17. The first, at 7:45 am, is Holy Eucharist Rite I celebrating the Third Sunday of Advent.
The second service will feature the Christmas Pageant, led and reenacted by children of the parish in various roles. Come support the children as they retell the story of Christ’s birth.
If your child would like to participate in the pageant, make sure to come to the tryouts on Wednesday, November 29, from 5:00-6:30 pm. If your child wishes to tryout for Mary or Joseph, please be here before 5:30 pm.
The Fourth Sunday of Advent
Sunday, December 24, 2017 – 9:00 am
One service at 9:00 am of Holy Eucharist Rite II will be held on the morning of Sunday, December 24. There will be no Sunday School or Children’s Church on this Sunday. Childcare will be provided for this service in the nursery.
Sunday, December 24, 2017 – 5, 8, & 11 pm
Three services will be held on the evening of Christmas Eve, Sunday, December 24.
The first service at 5:00 pm will begin with a twenty minute prelude of choral anthems and hymns with the Boys and Girls’ Choir and Ascension Singers at 4:40 pm. This service has traditionally been geared towards families. Childcare will be provided for this service. Drop your kids off in the nursery before the service. There will also be a return of the blessing of the Christ infant. Have your kids bring the model Christ child from your nativity set from home to be blessed by Fr. Brett.
The second service at 8:00 pm will begin with a thirty minute prelude of choral anthems and hymns with the Parish Choir at 7:30 pm. This service is a traditional Holy Eucharist Rite II service and is also family friendly, just enough time to get to bed! Childcare will not be provided for this service. If you have kids, skip the nursery and come right in to hear and experience the Christmas Eve service.
The third service at 11:00 pm will begin with a thirty minute prelude of choral anthems and hymns with the Parish Choir at 10:30 pm. This service is a repeat of the 8:00 pm service, but with incense. This service will conclude around or after midnight and childcare will not be provided.
