Guide to the Holidays at Ascension


Advent Lessons and Carols // Sunday, December 2, 5:30 pm // The annual Lessons & Carols service for Advent is scheduled for Sunday, December 2, at 5:30 pm. Scripture and music come together to establish the atmosphere of watchful waiting characteristic of the season. A reception follows in the parish hall.

A Grace-Filled Christmas // Wednesday, December 12, 6:45 pm, Chapel // People either delight in the period leading up to Christmas, or endure it with dread. On Wednesday, December 12, the Stephen Ministry group at Ascension will offer a service entitled, A Grace-Filled Christmas. It’s a time where all people can experience the holiness of the season in a quiet, contemplative manner that both affirms the dignity of those who struggle during the holidays, while at the same time emphasizing hope and light. The service begins at 6:45 pm in the nave, followed by a community supper downstairs

Nativity Pageant Sunday // Sunday, December 16, 10:00 am // Come watch as the children of Ascension take over the service as they reenact the story of the Nativity.  Note: This year we will only move the Nativity Pageant Sunday to 10:00 am. All other Sundays will remain at 10:30 am as usual.

Christmas Eve // Monday, December 24, Services at 5:00, 8:00, and 11:00 pm // Three services will be offered this year in celebration of Christmas Eve. Twenty minutes of music precedes the 5:00 pm service, and thirty minutes of music precedes the 8:00 and 11:00 pm service.

Christmas Day // Tuesday, December 25, Service at 10:00 am // A service for Christmas Day will be offered in the chapel at 10:00 am to celebrate the birth of Christ on a joyous Christmas morning.

Fun for the Family

Date Night // Friday, December 7, 6:00-9:00 pm // Come let us take care of the kids while you enjoy a night out at a holiday party or just relax at home. Pizza will be served! RSVP to

TWEENS Shopping Trip // Friday, December 7, 6:00-9:00 pm // Our Ascension TWEENS will be taking their proceeds from the Bake Sale and going gift shopping for Angel Tree kids. Then they will enjoy dinner out. The van leaves from church at 6:10 pm. Kids in grades 3-5 are welcome to join. A big Thank You to all who bought the goodies from the Bake Sale or donated so we can spread Christmas cheer to those less fortunate.

Drop n’ Shop // Saturday, December 8, 10:00 am-2:00 pm, Christian Education Wing // Need a little bit more time to shop for Christmas? Bring your kiddos to the Drop n’ Shop on December 8th from 10:00am-2:00pm. We will watch holiday movies, eat pizza, play games and do crafts. RSVP to to register and let us know if your kids will be here for lunch. The lunch will take place from 11:30-12:15pm.


Webb Madrigal Singers // Tuesday, December 4, 7:30 pm, Nave // The Webb Madrigal Singers will sing for the conclusion of the Stephen Ministry Christmas party. This concert is free and open to the public, and if you haven’t already seen Webb’s performers present their madrigals, you would be in for a treat. Students take their Renaissance garb seriously: picture brocade Rembrandt outfits accessorized with feathers, jewels, and anything just shy of ermine.

West High School Christmas Concert // Thursday, December 6, 7:00 pm // The West High School choral department will present holiday standards in a concert on the evening of Thursday, December 6, at 7:00 pm. Four or five different ensembles will perform. Consider joining West High School parents as they cheer on and support their musically talented children. It might just get you in the holiday spirit.

ESK Christmas Concert // Thursday, December 13, 6:00 pm // Ascension will host The Episcopal School of Knoxville for their annual Christmas concert. Come listen to holiday favorites and support your local Episcopal School.

The Lunch Bunch: Holiday Carols Sing-a-long // Tuesday, December 18, 11:30 am // The Lunch Bunch will hold their annual holiday themed lunch gathering on Tuesday, December 18. The afternoon begins with appetizers and beverages at 11:30 am. Lunch then follows with a great feast of sharing. Afterwards, we’ll sing favorite holiday songs and carols. Bring $2 and an appetizer, side dish, or dessert to share. You can sign-up in the parish office at the reception counter.

Community Fundraising

Poinsettia Sale // Sunday, December 2 and 9, Foyer // Orders will be taken in the lobby before and after services both today and next Sunday for poinsettias. Plants ordered today will be available on December 2; those ordered next week may be picked up December 9. Support the music department even as you decorate your home for the holidays!

Fair-Trade Olive Oil // Sunday, December 2 and 9, Foyer // The annual olive oil sale is back, and you can make a responsible, fair-trade purchase to benefit Palestinian farmers in the West Bank. Pricing is $15 per bottle or $85 per six bottle case. Jinka McLaurin will be in the foyer on Sunday, December 2 and 9. You can call (865-531-4715) or text (865-414-6447) to reserve your order.

The Giving Tree // The Giving Tree will benefit members of the Lyons View Neighborhood (the community nearest the church), FISH Hospitality Pantries, and Family Promise of Knoxville. Gift cards in $20 denominations will be available for Food City, Wal-Mart, KUB, Kroger, and Target,and in $10 denominations for CVS, Walgreens, and gas-only Pilot cards. Please make sure to have your gift card donations in by Sunday, December 16.
