Journey through...

Holy Week 2019

We invite you to journey through Holy Week at Ascension. Each day of Holy Week has at least one service specific for the day. It begins with Palm Sunday and ends with Easter Sunday. Scroll down and explore the different services of Holy Week.

Palm Sunday
Hosanna! Hosanna!

Palm Sunday

Sunday, April 14, 2019
Services at 8:00 and 10:30 am

Ever wondered what the shouts of celebration and hails of ‘Hosanna’ would have been like? Palm Sunday reenacts Christ’s entry into Jerusalem and marks the beginning of Holy Week. All services feature a blessing of the palm branches and celebration of the entry into Jerusalem. Gather outside the main wooden doors of the church, in the drop-off circle, to pick-up your branches and celebrate Palm Sunday.

Quiet Eucharist
Contemplative Beginnings...

Quiet Eucharist

Monday and Tuesday, April 15 & 16, 2019
Services at 5:45 pm

Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday, but Monday and Tuesday of Holy Week have been oft-forgotten with no special service to celebrate. Ascension began offering a “Quiet Eucharist” to provide an opportunity to reflect on the coming days of Holy Week, to center oneself spiritually, and build a spiritual practice of participating in Holy Week on each day. The Quiet Eucharist services provide ample time for reflection, stillness, and contemplation. Gather in the chapel by 5:45 pm to experience this new service.

Tenebrae
From Light to Darkness...

Tenebrae

Wednesday, April 17, 2019
Service at 7:00 pm

The name Tenebrae (the Latin word for “darkness” or “shadows”) has for centuries been applied to the ancient monastic night and early morning services of the last three days of Holy Week, which in medieval times came to be celebrated on the preceding evening. Toward the end of the service, this last candle is hidden, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil. Suddenly, a loud noise is made, symbolizing the earthquake at the time of the resurrection (Matthew 28:2), the hidden candle is restored to its place, and all depart in silence by the candle’s light.

This service features the singing of Allegri’s Miserere Mei, plainchant psalms, and motets sung by members of the Ascension choirs.

Maundy Thursday
A New Experience

Maundy Thursday

Thursday, April 18, 2019
Service at 7:00 pm

Maundy Thursday commemorates Christ’s institution of the Eucharist through an engaging and innovative worship/feast in the sanctuary. Featuring Mediterranean fare, the Maundy Thursday service puts a new spin on the traditional Maundy Thursday Eucharist and stripping of the altar. The All-Night Vigil will follow the Maundy Thursday service. Childcare will be provided.

All Night Vigil
Sit one hour and pray with me...

All-Night Vigil

Thursday, April 18, to Friday, April 19, 2019
Beginning at 8:00 pm

Jesus told the disciples in the garden of Gethsemane, ‘Sit here while I pray,” after having celebrated Passover. We commemorate the disciples watching with the All-Night Vigil before Good Friday. Taking one-hour turns throughout the night, individuals (at least in pairs) stay for an hour to keep watch using the time for contemplation, reflection, and prayer.

The Great Vigil
Waiting for Resurrection...

The Great Vigil of Easter

Saturday, April 20, 2019
Service at 7:00 pm

The first celebration of the resurrection after Good Friday, the Great Vigil of Easter, commemorates Christ’s triumph over death, his resurrection, and the baptism of potential members who have awaited baptism through Lent. This year’s Great Vigil will feature a candlelight service with the kindling of a fire, the relighting of the Paschal candle, baptisms, and the salvation narrative all culminating in the Easter Acclamation that Christ has triumphed over death and is risen. Note: Incense will be used at this service.
