General Community News

Today we celebrate the baptism of Penny Jean Cole, daughter of Matthew and Christa Cole at the 10:00 am service.

Peanut Butter & Ice Cream Sunday // Today is Peanut Butter and Ice Cream Sunday. Drop-off your jars of peanut butter in the narthex or make a donation to FISH Hospitality Pantries and FISH volunteers will do the shopping for you! FISH is able to purchase food at much lower prices than retail, so your donations do more work. Thanks to special purchases and donated food items, $5 will feed a family of four for three days. After the 10:00 am service, The Crusin’ Cone will return to cool you down from the Summer heat. Head out to the parking lot to grab an ice cream cone before going home. Donations are gladly accepted to defray the cost of today’s treats. The Coffee Hour reception is hosted by Ascension Cares.

Dog Days of Summer // Sunday, July 30, 10:00 am // Does Fido miss you while you’re at church? Hoåw well does your hound howl the hymns? Bring your furry friend to church next Sunday for the Dog Days of Summer Sunday. LAMBS (Lovers of Animals Ministry and Bible Study) will have pet treats for sale between and after services.

Blessing of the Backpacks // August 6, 10:00 am service // Sharpen your pencils, pack your bags, school is almost here! Kids (and adults) bring your backpacks to church on Sunday, August 6, to have them blessed before heading back to school. The Coffee Hour for Blessing of the Backpacks Sunday is sponsored by the Tweens Youth Group, directed by Megan Alden, and we will celebrate Chelsea Krahulik’s ministry at Ascension.

Bishop Election! // This coming Friday is our diocesan convention and bishop election. Perhaps you attended the walkabouts and would like your delegates to know your opinion. Your delegates are: Ron Wells, Maribeth Manoff, Mardel Fehrenbach, Joe Vrba, and Pam Douglass. Your alternate delegates are Donna Bryan and Daniel Ellis. Please pray for a smooth convention and the guidance of God’s gracious spirit!

Youth News

Tweens Youth Group Returns! // August 4, 6:00-9:00 pm // Tweens Youth Group, a socially engaging and faith forming youth group for kids in grades 3-5, will resume for the Fall semester on Friday, August 4, from 6:00-9:00 pm. Dinner will be served along with fun lessons and service projects. To find out more and to receive an events schedule, email Megan Alden at megan@knoxvilleascension.org.

Chelsea Krahulik joined the Ascension staff as youth minister three years ago. During that time, she has proved to be one of the most capable youth ministers in Knoxville. It is therefore with sadness for us, but joy for Chelsea, that we announce her departure to take a position at a church in Atlanta in order move closer to her ties in Atlanta. Chelsea’s last day will be August 7, and we will celebrate Chelsea’s ministry at Ascension following church on August 6. Chelsea’s letter to the congregation follows. (We will miss you, too, Chelsea!)

Meanwhile, your clergy and staff plans to work with the Families Steering Committee to begin the process of securing Chelsea’s replacement and assuring continuity during the fall youth Sunday School and activities season.

Dear Church Family,

I want to let you know about some important news in my life! As my personal and family relationships evolve, I have decided to relocate in order to be close to important people in my life. For this reason, I have accepted a call at a church in the Atlanta area. My last day at Ascension will be August 7th, 2017.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to serve as your Youth Minister for the past three years. It has been a joy to get to know each of you and to walk alongside the teens of Ascension during this significant season in their lives. I look forward to what lies ahead for the youth program at Ascension even as I anticipate a new call. Please know that I will miss each of you dearly!

May God bless you as you continue to pursue God’s work in the Knoxville community!

Gatherings and Outings

Everlasting: Sisterhood Women’s Retreat // Friday, October 20, to Sunday, October 22, Sewanee // Have you desired to escape from the busy routine? A spiritual respite to reinvigorate your faith? Consider joining other women of the parish at the Fall Sisterhood Retreat. This year’s theme is “Everlasting” and will be led by Deacon Sarai Wender. All workshops are optional. The deadline for the deposit to reserve a room is fast approaching, today, July 23! The cost for a private room is $275, and double occupancy is $215. The room price includes dinner on Friday night, three meals on Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday. An additional fee of $15 is required for workshop materials. Please drop off deposits (half the room rate + $15) to Beverly Hutto in the parish office with “Sisterhood Retreat” as the designation. Hike This One! Ascension Trekkers venture into Tremont // Wednesday, August 2, 9:00 am // While only a two mile round trip, this hike is considered a moderate hike due to some steepness and roots and rocks. The reward for this work? Views of a lovely waterfall, rocky outcrops for a scenic lunch, photo opportunities, and all in a half-day hike! Ascension Cares – No One Walks Alone

Caring and compassion for fellow parishioners in need is central to our service to God and each other. All of our pastoral care ministries fall under the umbrella of the “Ascension Cares” ministry to ensure that ‘No One Walks Alone’ in times of spiritual or emotional crisis. This is facilitated by pastoral care leaders called shepherds. They see that the pastoral care needs in the community are met with one of Ascension’s many ministries. An email to your Shepherd team will go to the clergy as well.

The Episcopal Church of the Ascension maintains two prayer lists. The first list is for parishioners, staff, and their immediate families, and prayers are offered for these people during Sunday services. Their names can be found on the white prayer board in the office area. Names remain on this list, generally, for three weeks.

The second list is called the Supplemental Prayer list and includes additional names as requested by you. The people on the Supplemental Prayer list are prayed for by members of those leading morning and evening prayer. Names will remain on this list as needed for appropriate prayer support.
