General Community News
Reaching Summer Heights: Hike Sunday // Everyone in the parish is invited to participate in Hike Sunday today! The Ascension Trekkers and the Ascension Bell Choir are collaborating to offer hiking foods after the 10:00 am church service for Coffee Hour and to lead easy hikes at Ijams Nature Center. All will hike the River Boardwalk Trail. After which, a slightly more steep trail will be offered that provides views of the quarry and an historic cemetery. Plan for approximately three hours of time away from the church. There is still room to participate in these hikes. Meet at the Coffee Hour after the 10:00 am service. We will determine carpooling needs as per the number interested in going.
Ascension’s 2nd (Could it be annual?) Farmer’s Market Sunday // Sunday, July 16, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm // Once again, Ascension will host local farmers and artists for your enjoyment. Take advantage of the opportunity to shop directly from local merchants following the 8:00 am and 10:00 am services. Come and relish the atmosphere while partaking in refreshments sponsored by the Labyrinth Guild. If you would like to share your artistic gifts or have vegetables or homemade wares to sell, contact Deacon Sarai Wender at email@example.com or 423-231-3700 by Wednesday, July 12.
Peanut Butter & Ice Cream Sunday // Sunday, July 23, is Peanut Butter and Ice Cream Sunday. Please bring jars of peanut butter or make a donation to FISH Hospitality Pantries and FISH volunteers will do the shopping for you! FISH is able to purchase food at much lower prices than retail, so your donations do more work. Thanks to special purchases and donated food items, $5 will feed a family of four for three days. Donation envelopes will be available in the pews beginning next Sunday. After the 10:00 am service, The Crusin’ Cone will return to cool you down from the Summer heat. Head out to the parking lot to grab an ice cream cone before going home.
Popcorn Theology: Adult Christian Education // Beginning Today, July 9, 9:00 am in the Parish Hall // Head to the Parish Hall beginning Sunday, July 9, for “Popcorn Theology,” a random topic open discussion forum in which the topic of the day will be drawn from a fish bowl. Coffee and donuts will be available. “Popcorn Theology” will continue through Sunday, July 30. Note: The Sojourners class will join “Popcorn Theology” for July.
Ascension Endowment Opens Grant Proposals // The Ascension Endowment Fund seeks to enable the congregation to fulfill its mission more completely by developing its ministries beyond what is possible through the annual operating budget. Distributions from the Endowment Fund are used for a variety of purposes such as: outreach ministries and grants; seed money for new ministries and special one-time projects; and capital improvements of the church. The proposal deadlines for 2017 are July 31 and December 31. Proposal request forms are available in print in the church office or on the church website at www.knoxvilleascension.org/endowment. Please complete and return proposals on or before the deadline via fax (865-584-7922) or mail (ATTN: Endowment Committee, 800 S. Northshore Dr. Knoxville, TN, 37919). All mailed proposals need to be postmarked by the deadline.

The Episcopal Church of the Ascension maintains two prayer lists. The first list is for parishioners, staff, and their immediate families, and prayers are offered for these people during Sunday services. Their names can be found on the white prayer board in the office area. Names remain on this list, generally, for three weeks.
The second list is called the Supplemental Prayer list and includes additional names as requested by you. The people on the Supplemental Prayer list are prayed for by members of those leading morning and evening prayer. Names will remain on this list as needed for appropriate prayer support.
Ascension Cares – No One Walks Alone
Caring and compassion for fellow parishioners in need is central to our service to God and each other. All of our pastoral care ministries fall under the umbrella of the “Ascension Cares” ministry to ensure that ‘No One Walks Alone’ in times of spiritual or emotional crisis. This is facilitated by pastoral care leaders called shepherds. They see that the pastoral care needs in the community are met with one of Ascension’s many ministries. An email to your Shepherd team will go to the clergy as well.
Team 1 Last Names A-L
This list is administered by Annette Burton and Bill Perry.
Team 2 Last Names M-Z
