General Community News

Blessing of the Backpacks // Today, 10:00 am service // Sharpen your pencils, pack your bags, school is almost here! Kids (and adults) bring your backpacks to the 10:00 am service to have them blessed before heading back to school.

Celebrating Chelsea Krahulik // Today’s Coffee hour will be dedicated to celebrating Chelsea Krahulik’s ministry at Ascension. We will miss you, Chelsea!

“Choose Some Shoes” // Along with Blessing of the Backpacks, the Children’s Ministry is holding a shoe drive for the kids at White Oak School in Campbell County. Every year, in this poverty stricken area, children come to school with shoes that are too big, too small, or inappropriate for the season. The principal would love to have a small “shoe shop” and be able to tell a child, “choose some shoes.” Please consider buying a pair of closed toed shoes, any size for kids in grades K-8, male or female. A collection barrel will be available in the Foyer. If you have any questions, email Megan Alden at

Get ready for Rally Day, and Ascension’s 60th Birthday! // Next Sunday, August 13 // Sign-ups for the Rally Day lunch are being taken in the Foyer. Today is the last day before the deadline of tomorrow at noon to sign-up. Catered lunch box meals will be available and priced at: $10/adult, $5/child, and $30 max/family. And yes, one of those options is vegetarian! The deadline to sign-up is Monday, August 7, by noon. The afternoon will feature a water slide for kids, activities for kids in the playground, and a giant cake. The Rally Day skit will take place at the 10:00 am service.

Thank You // Thank you to all who came out for Dog Days of Summer Sunday. LAMBS raised $250 which will be donated to the Pantry For Feeding Pets, a local non-profit initiative to distribute pet food through hunger ministries and direct assistance in the Knox County and surrounding areas.

Return to Three Services // The three service schedule will resume on Sunday, August 20, with services at 7:45 (Chapel), 9:00 (sanctuary), and 11:15 (sanctuary).

Gatherings and Outings

Foyer Groups! // This fall, the Foyer Group Program is making a fresh start! Sign-up in the Narthex to join foyers beginning this fall with a dinner kickoff. Foyer Groups are primarily social gatherings of small groups of people within the church. By signing-up, you will be placed in a foyer group, and your group will meet every 4-6 weeks through the “school” year, either at homes or in restaurants (or both). Your foyer group will have the opportunity to decide whether to include a prayerful or spiritual element to the group (such as reading a book, or including a short prayer or meditation), but mostly joining a foyer group will provide you the opportunity to get to know other members of Ascension.

“Kick Some Brass” Handbell Camp // Saturday, August 12, 10:00 am // Interested in handbell? Looking for an opportunity to minister through music in an alternative to choir? Head to the handbell camp on Saturday, August 12. The opening session, at 10:00 am, will be a meet-and-greet and introduction to the handbells. Email Andrew Morehead at

A Blast from the Past // Interested in Gregorian chant? Want to learn how to read and sing chant notation in a low-obligation group? Consider the Ascension Schola. An introduction to chant workshop will be held on Satuday, August 26, beginning at 9:00 am (updated from last week). From there, regular rehearsals will be determined. For more information, contact Andrew Morehead at or 865-282-9986.

Volunteer Opportunities

Ushers // Do you like a bright, friendly greeting when you walk into church on Sunday? Looking to serve in a low-obligation capacity while meeting new people? The Usher Ministry is looking for additional volunteers to serve on Sunday mornings, especially at the 11:15 am service, and this is the perfect volunteer opportunity for you. To begin serving, email Alan Wright at or call 865-805-0303.

Wanted: Chancel Masters // A chancel master assists the clergy with the logistics and setup of volunteers and the chancel for worship services by ensuring that Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Acolytes, and all other personnel and items for the service are in place. Once the service begins, the Chancel Master’s role is finished! Contact Allen Douglass at 865-207-7110 or for more information or to volunteer!

Please keep these individuals in your prayers:

The Episcopal Church of the Ascension maintains two prayer lists. The first list is for parishioners, staff, and their immediate families, and prayers are offered for these people during Sunday services. Their names can be found on the white prayer board in the office area. Names remain on this list, generally, for three weeks.

The second list is called the Supplemental Prayer list and includes additional names as requested by you. The people on the Supplemental Prayer list are prayed for by members of those leading morning and evening prayer. Names will remain on this list as needed for appropriate prayer support.

Ascension Cares – No One Walks Alone

Caring and compassion for fellow parishioners in need is central to our service to God and each other. All of our pastoral care ministries fall under the umbrella of the “Ascension Cares” ministry to ensure that ‘No One Walks Alone’ in times of spiritual or emotional crisis. This is facilitated by pastoral care leaders called shepherds. They see that the pastoral care needs in the community are met with one of Ascension’s many ministries. An email to your Shepherd team will go to the clergy as well.
