Today is Rally Day and the celebration of Ascension’s 60th Anniversary! // You will notice that the 10:00 am service is a little different today. A Rally Day skit will take the place of the sermon, so be prepared for any eventuality. After the 10:00 am service, the Rally Day picnic will take place. For those who may not have reserved a boxed lunch, you may still be able to purchase one. Visit the walk-up table for availability.
Keeping the Family Together // There will be no children’s church today so that the whole family may stay and enjoy the Rally Day skit and worship together.
Return to Three Services // The three service schedule will resume next Sunday, August 20, with services at 7:45 (Chapel), 9:00 (sanctuary), and 11:15 (sanctuary).
Looking for the Fall Programming Line-Up? // Grab a copy of the Parish Paper to read all about Sunday School options, weekly fellowship groups, and bible studies that are meeting during the fall.
“Choose Some Shoes” Campaign Comes to a Close // This is the last Sunday to drop off shoe donations for the “Choose Some Shoes” drive. Shoes will go to children of White Oak School in Campbell County. All sizes of new closed toed shoes are welcome.
Tweens Youth Group // Tweens will meet this coming Wednesday, August 16, beginning at 6:30 pm in the Garden Room. Tweens is open to all kids in grades 3-5.
Middle School Youth Group // What is a Disciple and what does that have to do with Capture the Flag? Come find out this Wednesday, August 16, at 6:30 pm in the youth room. Hope to see you there!
High School Youth Group to Begin Next Sunday // On Sunday, August 20, the High School Youth Group will begin it’s program year with a lunch meeting after the 11:15 am service in the Youth Room. Lunch will be provided. We’ll have a fun time of ice breakers, games, and discussion about upcoming events.
Gatherings and Outings
Foyer Supper Club! // This fall, the Foyer Supper Club Program is making a fresh start! Sign-up at the reception counter in the parish office to join the supper club beginning this fall with a dinner kickoff. Foyer Supper Club groups are primarily social gatherings of small groups of people within the church. By signing-up, you will be placed in a supper club group, and your group will meet every 4-6 weeks through the “school” year, either at homes or in restaurants (or both). Your foyer group will have the opportunity to decide whether to include a prayerful or spiritual element to the group, but mostly joining a supper club group will provide you the opportunity to get to know other members of Ascension. A Taste of Italy: The Sisterhood heads to Naples // The Sisterhood is going to one of the best Italian restaurants in Knoxville, Naples, located at 5500 Kingston Pike, on August 17th at 6:00 pm. They have a large selection of dishes and adult beverages that has made them a favorite for many, many, years. The Sisterhood is a loose confederation of women from the parish, and their friends. All women are invited to attend our dinners. The food, conversation, and camaraderie is always friendly and lively. We hope that you will join us. A Blast from the Past // Interested in Gregorian chant? Want to learn how to read and sing chant notation in a low-obligation group? Consider the Ascension Schola. An introduction to chant workshop will be held on Satuday, August 26, beginning at 9:00 am (updated from last week). From there, regular rehearsals will be determined. Pasta and Bluegrass Festival // Saturday, August 26, 5:00 pm // Central Baptist // Who wouldn’t love pasta and bluegrass? Head to the Pasta and Bluegrass Festival to support Family Promise. You’ll have the luxury of fifteen tastings of competition level pastas (gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan available) while listening to The Y’uns, The Trinity Boys, and other bluegrass bands. You’ll also have the opportunity to shop from an Italian Market with various artisan wares for sale. Tickets are $10/adult and $5/children (there’s a children’s festival too!). Ushers // Do you like a bright, friendly greeting when you walk into church on Sunday? Looking to serve in a low-obligation capacity while meeting new people? The Usher Ministry is looking for additional volunteers to serve on Sunday mornings, especially at the 11:15 am service, and this is the perfect volunteer opportunity for you. Wanted: Chancel Masters // A chancel master assists the clergy with the logistics and setup of volunteers and the chancel for worship services by ensuring that Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Acolytes, and all other personnel and items for the service are in place. The Episcopal Church of the Ascension maintains two prayer lists. The first list is for parishioners, staff, and their immediate families, and prayers are offered for these people during Sunday services. Their names can be found on the white prayer board in the office area. Names remain on this list, generally, for three weeks.
The second list is called the Supplemental Prayer list and includes additional names as requested by you. The people on the Supplemental Prayer list are prayed for by members of those leading morning and evening prayer. Names will remain on this list as needed for appropriate prayer support.
Ascension Cares – No One Walks Alone
Caring and compassion for fellow parishioners in need is central to our service to God and each other. All of our pastoral care ministries fall under the umbrella of the “Ascension Cares” ministry to ensure that ‘No One Walks Alone’ in times of spiritual or emotional crisis. This is facilitated by pastoral care leaders called shepherds. They see that the pastoral care needs in the community are met with one of Ascension’s many ministries. An email to your Shepherd team will go to the clergy as well.
