Program: Ann Brunger, Henri Nouwen. Henri taught her to pray with open hands, to be open to God and others. Born in the Netherlands into a Catholic family. He studied Psychology in Seminary came to the Meininger Institute. He taught at Notre Dame briefly and Yale Divinity for 10 years. He spent 6 months at Yale and 6 months at the Trappist Abbey. He was always called Henri. He had an acute sense of social justice: he was at the march in Selma and went to South America. He then taught at Harvard briefly and wrote about the tension between humility and the sense of competition as an academician. He left the academic life and moved to a house where he took care of a man who could not take care of himself: he would bath him, dress him, brush his teeth, and prepare his breakfast..He had a period in his life that he could not pray and and was in a state of despair. His spirituality was of this world and and not of the next world. He was ecumenical.
