A Letter from Deacon Sarai

Dear Friends,

Twenty months ago I was an angst filled newly ordained deacon coming from a small and struggling parish in Morristown.  I was nervous and a bit awkward.  I had no experience in the role of a deacon—or at least—in wearing a collar.  I had never ‘set the table’ for Eucharist.  Trembling was standard for me.  The humility and the enormity of it all still resonates—being placed with you good people here at Ascension.

Beginnings ….

Twenty months ago I participated for my first time in one of the many baptisms which take place in this beautiful space.  The poignant words of the Prayers for the Candidates have come to mean even more to me now—than ever before.  The requests spoken to God on behalf of the congregation are entreaties’ of LOVE.  The words, “Deliver”, “Open”, “Fill”, “Keep”, “Teach”, “Send, and “Bring”—ALL harken to the Love of God and one another.

And that is my prayer for all of us.  These words are not only for the newly baptized—but, for each and every one of us…every day.

I have no words which can express my sincere gratitude for your welcome, help, love, support, laughter, listening, teaching, and Being—here with you.

It has been more than an honor for me to say, “I am the Deacon at The Church of the Ascension”.  Thank you for that gift.  I will treasure it always…

Being married to a German, I get to throw out a small piece of the language of the Motherland.  I much prefer the word, ‘Auf wiedersehen’.  For, it means so much more than ‘Goodbye’.  It literally translates, “You, again, I will see”.  I know this is true.

I will miss you all.  Truly.

May God continue to Bless you, Keep you, and His face shine upon you and warm you…like the sun…and bring you Peace.

Auf wiedersehen & Frohliche Weihnachten ~

Please keep these individuals in your prayers:

Ryan Smith, Brandy Starks-Holtcamp

The Episcopal Church of the Ascension maintains two prayer lists. The first list is for parishioners, staff, and their immediate families, and prayers are offered for these people during Sunday services. Their names can be found on the white prayer board in the office area. Names remain on this list, generally, for three weeks. The second list is called the Supplemental Prayer list and includes additional names as requested by you. The people on the Supplemental Prayer list are prayed for by members of those leading morning and evening prayer. Names will remain on this list as needed for appropriate prayer support.
