Friends of Music and the Arts marks its 20th anniversary season in 2019-2020 with a variety of events designed to be of broad appeal.
The initial offering in September represents a special collaboration with Marble City Opera. Over the course of two successive evenings City of Ashes, an opera composed by Juilliard composer Evan Fine and authored by Ascension parishioner Emily Anderson, will receive its North American premiere. Previously presented in Parish and in Beijing, City of Ashes deals with love, pain, and redemption as experienced by Lotte and Lili, two women living in post-war Berlin in 1945. FOMA is excited to be able to host this special presentation with both composer and librettist present and is honored to provide our church as a sacred space for this deeply spiritual and inspirational opera.
FOMA is also honored to host The Kingdom Choir in its inaugural tour of the States. This gospel choir, founded by Karen Gibson and based in London, came to international prominence after performing for the wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry at Windsor Castle in May of 2018. Tickets for this concert will likely be in high demand, so audience-goers will want to secure theirs early.
We are pleased to host organist Carolyn Craig in recital on March 12th. A native of Knoxville, Carolyn has degrees from Indiana University and has just completed a year as organ scholar at Truro Cathedral in Cornwall, England. She will be continuing her studies this year at Yale.
Ascension’s own choirs will perform with orchestra on February 23rd when they present Frans Schubert’s Mass in G and Magnificat in C. They will also mark seasonal observances with special music for the All Hallows’ Eve this fall, the annual Lessons and Carols service for Advent, and a Twelfth Night festival Eucharist on the eve of the Epiphany on January 5th.
An evening devoted to chamber music will round out the season’s events on May 4th when members of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra will perform music of Ludwig van Beethoven (in honor of the 250th anniversary of his birth), Sergei Prokofiev, and others.
We hope that an array of offerings such as this might have something for everyone. These offerings are made possible through the support of many friends and donors, and FOMA acknowledges that support with sincere gratitude.
