Frequently Asked Questions

Who Are We? What Do We Believe?
The hallmark of Ascension, both past and present, is strong member leadership, a highly engaged parish, and a talented, dedicated staff. Throughout its history, Ascension has thrived and pressed forward in its mission: to enable ourselves and others to experience God in Christ, to seek and serve Him in others, to grow towards Christ and to proclaim Him to the world. We invite you to explore more about what the Episcopal Church believes here!
Worship and What to Expect

8:00 Holy Eucharist Rite I — This early service is quieter and more introspective with minimal music and more traditional language to create a contemplative atmosphere. In a busy, cluttered life, the 8:00 am service provides space, comfort, and a new pace of experiencing Christ.

10:30 Holy Eucharist Rite II — This service is the exemplary Episcopal worship service that features many engaging sung and spoken elements. This service typically has complete liturgy printed in the bulletin. Our 10:30 am service also offers Children’s church for children ages four through 5th grade.

Sunday Summer Schedule — Sunday summer schedule begins June 13 and goes through mid-September, our service times are 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM. Sunday School will not meet during the summer.

9:15 Sunday School — Between our two services we have a Sunday School hour at 9:15 am with classes for Children, Youth, and Adults. All classes are open to everyone! Drop in one Sunday at a time for any class or join for the length of a series being offered. More info can be found on our Christian Education page.

5:00 Celtic Worship Service — The first Sunday of every month we offer an evening Celtic Service drawn from the liturgical traditions of early Celtic Christians and is a quiet, meditative worship experience. For more information on the Celtic Service, please see our Celtic Worship Service page here.

When You Arrive
Church of the Ascension is located at 800 S. Northshore Dr. Knoxville, TN, 37919. We are across the street from The Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

If you are a first-time visitor to Ascension, be sure to check our Worship Page to find the most up-to-date information about service times and Sunday school offerings. When arriving, you may enter through the main entrance off of Northshore Drive, circling to the back of the building. There is visitor, handicap, and additional parking available on the north side of the building. If you are visiting for a worship service, it is best to enter through the main doors on the east side. There is a circle drive for drop off, and you can enter through the three glass doors to the right of the wooden sanctuary doors.

When entering, look for a greeter, a member of the Newcomers’ ministry, or usher for assistance in finding the sanctuary.

Are there outreach opportunities?
Outreach at Ascension has been a vibrant part of our community’s identity. Over the years, our commitment to our local community has grown to service ten ministries, including Family Promise and the FISH Pantry. Visit our Outreach page under the ministries tab to learn more.
From Visitor to Member at Ascension
If you are interested in further connecting with Ascension, we have visitor cards located in our pews. Simply fill out a card and place it in the offering box. From there, our team of clergy and lay members will reach out to understand your needs and interests.

Throughout the year, there are opportunities to learn more about Ascension, the Episcopal Church, volunteer, and socialize with members. If you are interested in joining Ascension and have not been part of a church community before, there is a series of inquirers and confirmation classes held throughout the year. This series helps to deepen understanding of the Episcopal faith and shares a history of Ascension.  If you have been a formal member of another congregation in the past, we welcome you to attend this series as well. Either way, a member of staff can help to navigate the process of joining or transferring membership.
